Let \(s_n(x)\) denote the \(n\)th partial sum of the Fourier series of a function \(f\) which is periodic with period \(2\pi\) and integrable on \([-\pi,\pi]\) in the sense of Lebesgue. Given a subinterval \(I\subset[-\pi,\pi]\) let \[ \Omega(\phi,I)=\sup\Biggl\{\int^\pi_{-\pi}|\phi_x(t)-\phi_x(t')|dx: t,t'\in I\Biggr\}, \] where \(\phi_x(t)= f(x+t)+f(x-t)-2f(x)\). The authors give a sufficient condition for the convergence of the Fourier series of \(f\) in \(L^1\)-norm. Their main result is as follows: Theorem. If \(f\in L^1_{2\pi}\) and \(n\) is a positive integer, then \[ \int^\pi_{-\pi}|s_n(x)-f(x)|dx\leq\Biggl(1+{1\over \pi}\Biggr) \sum^n_{k=0} {1\over k+1} \Omega(\phi, I_{kn}), \] where \(I_{kn}=[{k\pi\over n+1},{(k+1)\pi\over n+1}]\), \(k=0,1,2,\dots,n\), and \(n\geq 1\).
