Recall that a family \(\{f_i\}_{i\in I}\) of \(\omega\)-linearly independent vectors in a separable Hilbert space \(H\) is a Riesz basis if there are two constants \(0<A\leq B\) such that \[ A|f|^2\leq \sum_{i\in I}|\langle f, f_i\rangle|^2\leq B|f|^2\tag{\(*\)} \] for each \(f\in H\). If \(\{f_i\}_{i\in I}\) satisfies \((*)\), without assuming \(\omega\)-linearly independence, then \(\{f_i\}_{i\in I}\) is called a frame. The author studies rather systematically the frames and their special subclass of Riesz frames. This subclass has the additional property that for every subset \(J\subseteq I\) the vectors \(\{f_i\}_{i\in J}\) form a frame in their closed span. One of the main results asserts that each Riesz frame contains a Riesz basis.
