Let \(X_2\) denote Mahowald's Thom spectrum over \(\Omega S^2\), with everything localized at 2. Let \(C\) denote the cofiber of the localization \(X_2 \to L_1 X_2\). There is a map \(h : \Sigma^5 C \to C\) constructed using the element \(h_{20} \in \pi_5 X_2\). The cofiber, \(X\), of \(h\) satisfies \(BP_* X \approx BP_*/(2, v_1^\infty) [t_1] \otimes \Lambda [t_2]\). In this paper \(\pi_* (L_2 X)\) is computed using the Adams-Novikov spectral sequence. The \(E_2\)-term is computed using the \(v_1\)-Bockstein spectral sequence. Then it is shown that there are no Adams differentials. In an earlier paper, Mahowald and the third author computed \(\pi_* (L_2 X_2)\), a more difficult computation and one which allows rather direct determination of \(\pi_* (L_2 X)\). The calculation here is independent of that of \(\pi_* (L_2 X_2)\). The purpose of this paper would seem to be to add insight by removing some complications.
