A class of Sobolev maps from a manifold \(M\) to another manifold \(N\) is defined in such a way that each map has a well-defined \([p]\)-homotopy type, provided \(N\) satisfies a certain topological hypothesis. Using this, the authors prove the existence of minimizers in \([p]\)-homotopy classes for some polyconvex variational problems. In the following, the authors define the concept of tame approximability which is approximability by an approximating sequence in the strong topology with the additional condition that the \(([p]+1)\)-dimensional Jacobians of the approximating functions also converge strongly to the corresponding Jacobian of the function which is being approximated. Indeed, this concept plays a crucial role in the deliberations of the authors.
