[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] This book is concerned with basic problems of the theory of non-saturated soils. It is based on the lectures given by the authors at the International Centre for Mechanical Sciences in Udine, September 19-23, 1994. The volume gives an up-to-date and systematic treatment of the subject. Beginning with a study of balance laws, there follows a treatment of constitutive equations and examples of experimental studies. The authors conclude with numerical methods and applications. The book consists of eleven chapters and an appendix. Chapter headings: 1. Generalized approach to heterogeneous media (by \textit{P. Jouanna} and \textit{M.-A. Abellan}); 2. Constitutive laws (by \textit{A. Gens}); 3. Experimental studies (by \textit{D. Bovet}, \textit{P. Jouanna}, \textit{E. Recordon} and \textit{C. Saix}); 4. Numerical solutions of thermo-hydro-mechanical problems (by \textit{B. A. Schrefler} and \textit{L. Simoni}); 5. Forced and natural convection (by \textit{D.Bovet} and \textit{E. Recordon}); 6. Large scale road test (by \textit{E. Recordon}); 7. Non-saturated consolidation under thermo-hydro-mechanical actions. An in situ heat storage facility in a clayey silt (by \textit{M.-A. Abellan}, \textit{P. Jouanna} and \textit{C. Saix}); 8. Construction and impoundement of an earthdam. Application of the coupled flow-deformation analysis of unsaturated soils (by \textit{E. Alonso} and \textit{F. Batlle}); 9. Large strain static and dynamic hydro-mechanical analysis of porous media (by \textit{E. A. Meroi} and \textit{B. A. Schrefler}); 10. Importance of boundary conditions. A radioactive storage case (by \textit{L. Simoni}); 11. Regional problems: Vertically averaged modelling (by \textit{L. Simoni}); Appendix: Some phenomenological models of polyphasic soils (by \textit{D. Bovet}). The book gives a detailed account of results in the field to which the authors have made interesting contributions.
