The purpose of this paper is to describe relations among the Donaldson polynomials of 4-manifolds containing 2-spheres and tori of negative self-interaction. To describe the basic result, let us briefly explain the notations used in this paper: \(M\) will denote a smooth, oriented manifold with an orientation of \(H^+_2(M)\). A capital letter \(A\) or \(C\) will denote either a smooth surface in \(M\) or the homology class it carries. The Donaldson polynomial invariant of a manifold \(M\) with \(b^+_2\) odd and greater than 1 will be denoted in the case of SU(2) bundles by \(D\) (or \(D_M\) for clarity). For SO(3) bundles for which an integral lift of \(w_2\) of the bundle is Poincaré dual to \(A\), the author uses the notation \(D^A\) for the Donaldson polynomial. For an evaluation of \(D\) on a class \(C\) which is repeated \(r\) times and an unspecified collection \(\Sigma= \{\Sigma_1,\dots, \Sigma_r\}\), the author uses the notation \(D(C^r,\Sigma)\). Then the following theorem is the basic result: Theorem 1.1. Suppose that \(C\) is a homology class of square \(-2\) in a 4-manifold \(M\), which is represented by a smoothly embedded torus. Let \(A\) satisfy \(A\cdot C\equiv 0\pmod 2\), and let \(\Sigma= \{\Sigma_i\}\) be a collection of homology classes orthogonal to \(C\). Then (1) \(D^A_M (C,\Sigma)=0\), (2) \(D^A_M (C^2,\Sigma)= 2D_M^{C+A} (\Sigma)\).
