A question of E. L. Stout asks the following. Let \(E\) be a closed subset of the complex projective space \(p^n\), \(n>2\), such that the Hausdorff \((2n-2)\)-measure of \(E\) with respect to the Fubini-study metric is less than that of a complex hyperplane in \(P^n\). The question asks whether it is true that \(E\) is a set of removable singularities for meromorphic functions. An affirmative answer was given by \textit{M. Lawrence}, `Polynomial hulls and geometric function theory of several complex variables'; Thesis, Univ. Washington, Seattle (1991). The present paper considers an extension of this question. The author proves that if \(E\) is a closed subset of locally finite Hausdorff \((2n-2)\) measure on an \(n\)-dimensional complex manifold \(\Omega\) and all the points of \(E\) are nonremovable for a meromorphic mapping of \(\Omega \backslash E\) into a compact Kähler manifold \(X\), then \(E\) is a pure \((n-1)\)-dimensional complex analytic subset of \(\Omega\). The original question for meromorphic functions corresponds to \(X=p^1\). The proof is essentially an application of the meromorphic extension property of compact Kähler manifolds proved by \textit{S. M. Ivashkovich} [Invent. Math. 109, No. 1, 47-54 (1992; Zbl 0782.32009)]. The meromorphic extension property of \(X\) is equivalent to saying the following: Every meromorphic mapping \(\varphi:T\to X\) on the ``squeezed polydisc'', defined by \[ T= \bigl\{(z,w) \in\mathbb{C}_z^{n-1} \times C_w: |z|<r, |w|<1\quad \text{or,} \quad|z|<1,\;1-r<|w|< 1\bigr\}, \] \(0<r<1\), \(n\geq 2\), extends to a meromorphic mapping \(\widetilde\varphi: U\to X\) on the unit polydisc \(U:|z |<1\), \(|w|<1\).
