Let \(R\) be an \(n^2 \times n^2\) matrix satisfying \((R-q) (R+q^{-1})=0\) and the braid relation. \textit{A. Giaquinto} and the second author constructed a quantum Weyl algebra \(A_n(R)\) [J. Algebra 176, No. 3, 861-881 (1995; Zbl 0846.17007)]. Starting from the derivatives and multiplication operator on a skew polynomial ring, the authors of the paper under review consider the subalgebra of \(A_n(R)\) generated by quadratic elements, and use this to obtain new deformations of \(U(gl_n)\) and \(U(sl_n)\). These are bialgebras which are noncommutative and noncocommutative. They share some properties of the enveloping algebras such as global, Krull and Gelfand-Kirillov dimensions. For \(sl_2\), the authors study in detail the ring structure and representation theory of their new deformation. The representation theory is similar to that of \(U_q(sl(2))\).
