    The author studies the critical rate of decay in Tauberian remainder theorems for a general class of summation methods. He defines the family \(K\) of all \(f\in C(0,\infty)\) such that \(f(x)= x^\beta \sum\alpha_m \exp(-mx)\), \(\beta\geq 0\), \(\alpha_m= O(m^r)\), \(r<\infty\), \(f\not\equiv 0\), and \(f'\in L'(0,\infty)\) and proves the following theorem: Let \(f\in K\). Suppose that (1) \(\int^\infty_0 f(\lambda x)d\alpha (\lambda)= O(\exp (-\eta(x)/x))\) as \(x\to 0^+\) where the measure \(\alpha\) satisfies (2) \(\alpha(x)= \int^x_0 d\alpha(x)= O(x^N)\) as \(x\to\infty\) for some finite \(N\), and (3) \(\alpha(x)= O(x^n)\) as \(x\to 0^+\), \(n=0,1,2\dots\;\). Then \(\lim_{x\to 0^+} \eta(x)=\infty\) implies that \(\alpha(x)=0\) for \(x>0\). \textit{J. Koravaar}'s theorem [in Nederl. Akad. Wet., Proc., Ser. A 57, 36-45 (1954; Zbl 0055.05802)] follows from this theorem.
