The authors prove the index theorem for the pairing of the Godbillon-Vey cyclic cocycle with the index class of the longitudinal Dirac operator for a codimension one foliation. In this direction several authors have obtained results for certain cocycles [cf. \textit{R. G. Douglas}, \textit{S. Hurder} and \textit{J. Kaminker}, The longitudinal cocycle and the index of Toeplitz operators, preprint, I. U.-P. U. I., (1988); see also J. Funct. Anal. 101, No. 1, 120-144 (1991; Zbl 0760.47009)]. \textit{A. Connes} and \textit{H. Moscovici} [Topology 29, No. 3, 345-388 (1990; Zbl 0759.58047)], studied the pairing between cyclic cocycles associated with group cocycles and Dirac operators on a Galois covering. The arguments used by the authors are given in terms of graph projections associated with the operators. The use of graph projections in the index problem is a new idea.
