The paper deals with nonlinear equations of the form \({du/dt}+\lambda Au+B(u,u)=f\) provided with the initial condition \(u(0)=u_0\). Here \(\lambda>0\) is a viscosity parameter, \(B(.,.)\) is a bilinear form and \(A\) is an unbounded linear selfadjoint operator, densely defined in a Hilbert space \(H\), positive, closed and such that \(A^{-1}\) is compact. The initial value problem is discretized as follows: With respect to space variables two methods of Galerkin type (called by the authors the Galerkin method and the nonlinear Galerkin method) are constructed, giving the semi-discretized solution \(u_n(t)\) in a finite-dimensional subspace of \(H\). Then the discretization in time is done in two ways, using the Euler explicit and implicit scheme. Several theorems, concerning the boundedness and stability of the obtained four numerical schemes, are proved in the sequel. No numerical experiments are given.
