The study of compact Kähler manifolds shows that a Kähler structure imposes very strong conditions on the homotopy type of a compact complex manifold. In particular not every finitely presented group \(G\) is the fundamental group of a compact Kähler manifold. Such groups are called Kähler groups. \textit{F. E. A. Johnson} and \textit{E. G. Rees} [Lect. Notes Math. 1474, 75-82 (1991; Zbl 0760.57012)] and \textit{M. Gromov} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 308, No. 3, 67-70 (1989; Zbl 0661.53049)] have proved that free products and in particular free groups, are not Kähler. In this paper, the author extends this result and finds other restrictions on the presentation of Kähler groups. He describes an algorithm derived from \textit{J. R. Stallings} [Knots, Groups, 3-Manif.; Pap. dedic. Mem. R. H. Fox, 101-118 (1975; Zbl 0313.20019)] to compute \(\Gamma_1/ \Gamma_2G\), \(\Gamma_2/ \Gamma_3 G\otimes R\) from a given presentation of a group \(G\) and he gives three conditions for a group to be Kähler. He illustrates the results with examples of groups that cannot be Kähler.
