This article deals with the operator equation \[ F(\varepsilon)(u)+ \varepsilon S(u)=f(\varepsilon), \qquad u\in X,\tag{1} \] with a small parameter \(\varepsilon\geq 0\) and nonlinear operators \(F(\varepsilon)\), \(S:X\to X^*\) of monotone type acting between a real reflexive Banach space \(X\) and its dual \(X^*\); the Hadamard correction of the limit equation \[ F(u)=f, \qquad u\in X\tag{2} \] is not assumed. The basic results of the article are concerned with asymptotic behavior of the solutions \(u_\varepsilon\) to Equation (1) for \(\varepsilon\to 0\); under some natural conditions including the assumption about strict convexity of \(X^*\) these results state that \(u_\varepsilon\) approximate the minimal residual in an appropriate sense for the limit equation (2). As a corollary of the basic theorems one can describe regularization algorithms for the approximate solution of Equation (2) which turn out to be convergent if and only if Equation (2) is solvable.
