Let \(G\) be a connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie group, and let \(C^*(G)\) denote its \(C^*\)-algebra. The main result of this paper is that \(C^*(G)\) can be obtained by performing a finite number of extensions of \(C^*\)-algebras with a Hausdorff spectrum by algebras of the same type. This has been proved -- in a less explicit way -- by \textit{J. Dixmier} in [Bull. Sci. Math., II. Ser. 90, 113-118 (1966; Zbl 0144.26606)] (see also \textit{N. V. Pedersen} [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 112, 423-467 (1984; Zbl 0589.22009)]). As a consequence, the author shows that \(C^*(G)\) has no non-trivial projections (see also the related article by \textit{E. Kaniuth} and \textit{K. F. Taylor} [Manuscr. Math. 65, 93-111 (1989; Zbl 0678.43005)]).
