Let \({\mathfrak g}\) be a Lie algebra, \(U({\mathfrak g})\) its universal enveloping algebra, and \(\Delta\) the comultiplication of \(U({\mathfrak g})\). Assume that \(U({\mathfrak g})^{\otimes 2}\) contains an element \(\Omega\) that commutes with \(\Delta({\mathfrak g})\). From these data, one can define the Yangian \(Y({\mathfrak g})\) [\textit{V. G. Drinfeld}, Sov. Math., Dokl. 32, 256-258 (1985); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 283, 1060-1064 (1985; Zbl 0588.17015)]. In this paper, the authors show that, by taking \({\mathfrak g}\) to be the `string' algebra (an infinite-dimensional Heisenberg algebra with an added derivation), and using a slight variant of Drinfeld's construction, the resulting `Yangian' is the Virasoro algebra.
