Automation of production processes is considered. Smart sensors and actuators can provide different services for different users. The functions of such intelligent instruments are presented in the frame of real-time process operating systems. The data base and the functional structure of real-time process operating systems are described. Conditions for smart-instruments-based distributed architectures and interoperability are analyzed. The state of the art of normalization efforts is described. Finally generic models of intelligent instruments are developed.
