The paper is an announcement of results published in the author's alg-geom electronic preprint ``Cohomology of compact hyperkähler manifolds'' (9501001, 85 pages). Let \(M\) be a hyperkähler manifold, i.e., a Riemannian manifold equipped with three complex structures \(I\), \(J\) and \(K\), such that \(I\circ J=-J\circ I=K\), and \(M\) is Kähler with respect to \(I\), \(J\) and \(K\). The author outlines a proof of the following structure theorem for the \(H^2(M)\)-generated part of the cohomology of \(M\). Theorem. Let \(\dim_\mathbb{C} M=2n\), and \(H^{2i}_r(M)\) be the subalgebra of \(H^*(M)\) generated by \(H^2(M)\). Then \(H^{2i}_r(M)\cong S^iH^2(M)\), for \(i\leq n\), and \(H^{2i}_r(M)\cong S^{2n-i}H^2(M)\), for \(i>n\). Also, there is proved that every two points of the connected component of the moduli space of holomorphically symplectic manifolds can be connected with ``twistor lines'' (projective lines holomorphically embedded in the moduli space and corresponding to the hyperkähler structures). At the end of the paper there are discussed some applications of the obtained results.
