    By the well-known Bernstein inequality if \(P(z)=\sum^n_{k=0} a_kz^k\), then \(M_P(R)\leq R^n M_p(1)\) \((R\geq 1)\), where \(M_P(R)=\max_{|z|=R}P(z)\). The authors study the best possible constant \(\phi_{n,k}\geq 0\) such that \(M_P(R)+\phi_{n,k}(R)|a_k|\leq R^n M_P(1)\), for \(k\geq2\) and show that \(\phi_{n,k}(R)=(R^n-R^{n-2})(1-f_k(R))\) for \(2+2k\leq n\), where \(0\leq f_k(R)\leq 1\) is independent of \(n\). Furthermore \(\lim_{R\to\infty} Rf_k(R)=2\cos{\pi\over k+2}\) \((k\geq 0)\). (Values of \(\phi_{n,k}\) for \(k=0\) and \(k=1\) are known; see the first author, \textit{Q. I. Rahman} and \textit{St. Ruscheweyh} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 288, 69-99 (1988; Zbl 0567.30006)]).
