The authors aim at constructing left-covariant differential calculi on the quantum group \(\mathrm{SL}_q(N)\), being close to the classical one according to some criteria. First of all this concerns the dimension of the differential calculus which is required to be \(N^2-1\). Furthermore, the associated higher-order calculi are expected to give the ordinary higher-order calculus on \(\mathrm{SL}(N)\) in the limit \(q\to1\). After having reviewed the basic notions, the authors start with the case \(N=2\). They find four first order differential calculi. All of them are 3-dimensional, but only one of them fulfills all requirements. This distinguished calculus is in fact directly related to the 3D-calculus on \(\mathrm{SU}_q(2)\) due to Woronowicz. For the group \(\mathrm{SL}_q(3)\) the authors construct two differential calculi obeying the criteria. Finally, they are able to generalize these two calculi also to the case \(N>3\). The result, however, fails to satisfy all imposed conditions, for the associated higher order calculi do not produce the correct limit when \(q\to1\).
