    The authors consider a discrete-time scalar nonlinear control system with unknown parameters that occur linearly. If the certainty equivalence adaptive control from the standard least squares estimates is used, then the system is globally stable if the growth rate of the nonlinearity is \(O(|x|^b)\) for \(b<8\). If \(b\geq 8\) then it is shown that in general the closed loop adaptive control system is not globally stable.
