The author introduces certain elements in the quantum group \(U_q(SU(2))\) and finds their decomposition in the irreducible representations of the quantum groups. The generalized matrix coefficients are then introduced using this decomposition. The author identifies the matrix coefficients with the Askey-Wilson polynomials. The result has also been announced by \textit{M. Noumi} and \textit{K. Mimachi} [Proc. Japan Acad. Sci. Ser. A 66, 146-149 (1990; Zbl 0707.33010)]. By applying the result the author obtains the orthogonality relation for \(q\)-Krawtchouk polynomials and the addition formula for \(q\)-Legendre polynomials. The author further finds the shift operator mapping the continuous \(q\)-Legendre polynomials to the continuous \(q\)-ultraspherical polynomials, and gets an expansion of the characters of the representations of the quantum group in terms of the Askey-Wilson polynomials.
