Let \(\rho\) be the Lebesgue measure on the \(\sigma\)-algebra \({\mathcal B}\) of Lebesgue measurable subsets of \(\Omega= [0,1]\). If \(1\leq p<\infty\), then \(L^p(\rho)\) consists of the equivalence classes of measurable functions on \(\Omega\) with norm of the form \(\| f\|_p= (\int| f|^pd\rho)^{1/p}\). The Volterra integral operator \(V: L^p(\rho)\to L^p(\rho)\) is defined \[ V(f)(t)= \int^t_0 f(s)ds,\quad 0\leq t\leq 1. \] This paper contains a number of statements which relate to the extensions of the operator \(V\) by the introduction of the measure \(m(E)= V(\chi_E)\), where \(\chi_E\) is the characteristic function of \(E\). The mapping \(I_m\) is defined by \(I_m(f)= \int_\Omega f dm\), so that \(I_m(f)= V(f)\) for \(f\in L^p(\rho)\), \(1\leq p\leq\infty\). If the total variation of \(V\) on \(L^p(\rho)\) is denoted by \(| m_p|\), then the statements of the paper include the inclusions \(L^p(\rho)\subseteq L^1(| m_p|)\subseteq L^1(m)\), where \(1\leq p<\infty\). In addition, it is shown that \(L^1(| m_1|)= L^1(m)= L^1(\rho)\), and \(I_{| m|}= I_m\) is not \(w\)-compact. One of the lemmas of the paper states that if \[ W_p(f)(t)= (1- t)^{(1/p)- 1}\int^t_0 (1- s)^{-1/p}f(s)ds, \] then \(W_p: L^1(\rho)\to L^1(\rho)\).
