It is known that the totally umbilical hypersurfaces in the \((n+1)\)-dimensional spheres \(S^{n+1}\) are characterized as the only hypersurfaces with weak stability index \(0\). In the present paper, the authors consider compact non-totally umbilical hypersurfaces \(M\subset S^{n+1}\) with constant mean curvature and prove the following theorem. Let \(M\subset S^{n+1}\) be a compact hypersurface with constant mean curvature. If \(M\) is not totally umbilical, then the weak stability index is greater than or equal to \(n+1\).
