The correspondence between Sophie Germain and Carl Friedrich Gauss (Q1927708)

Until now there were several editions of the correspondence of Sophie Germain with Carl Friedrich Gauss, but all of them were not complete. Now it seems that no more new letters can be found. The presented correspondence consists of 10 letters from Sophie Germain to Gauss and 4 letters from Gauss to Sophie Germain. But the letter C from Gauss, mentioned on pp. 671--674 and p. 696, is not ``dispersed'', but the original is preserved in Göttingen together with a copy of an unknown hand. Three of the 10 letters from Germain to Gauss had been unpublished until now, one letter was partially published. Five of Germain's letters were accompanied by ``Addenda'', most of them were also unpublished until now. These ``Addenda'' contain mathematical ideas of Germain which allow a much better insight into her mathematical competence and ability. The letters are accompanied by a long introduction including a chapter about the editorial project of Baldassare Boncompagni and a detailed analysis of the mathematical content of all letters. While in the introduction all Latin, German and French quotations are translated into English, the letters, all of them written in French, are presented only in the French original. Unfortunately, the authors have used modern spelling in the transcriptions, that is not the usual practice. There are several small mistakes: p. 597 ``Chasles'' instead of ``Charles'', and the original Latin text in the quotation on p. 610 is shorter than the translation. The following two titles should have been mentioned because they contain letters or parts of letters exchanged between Sophie Germain and Gauss: [\textit{G.
