Let \(A\) be a finitely generated domain over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. Suppose that the GK-dimension of \(A\) is less than 3 and \(A\) admits a nonzero locally nilpotent derivation. If \(A\) is not a PI-algebra then \(A\) is isomorphic to a subalgebra of an algebra \(\mathcal D(X)\) of differential operators on a smooth affine irreducible curve \(X\). Moreover \(A\) is birationally isomorphic to \(\mathcal D(X)\). If in addition the GK dimension of \(A\) is at least 2, then it is equal to 2.
