The authors explore exceptional orthogonal polynomials, i.e., orthogonal polynomials where one drops the constraint that the orthogonal polynomial sequence contains polynomials of every degree. More precisely, they concentrate on two types of zeros: regular zeros which lie in the interval of orthogonality, and exceptional zeros which lie outside this interval. In order to accomplish this task, they provide a suitable representation of exceptional polynomials by connecting their corresponding classical orthogonal polynomials with the isospectral Darboux transformation. As a consequence they derive Heine-Mehler type formulas for the exceptional Jacobi and Laguerre polynomials, which enables them to derive the asymptotic behavior of the regular zeros. In addition, they provide the location and asymptotic behavior of their exceptional zeros.
