Let \(G\) be a finite \(p\)-group (\(p\neq 5\) a prime number) which admits \(A_5\) (the alternating group of degree \(5\)) with an element of order \(5\) acting fixed point freely on \(G\). The main result proved in this paper is that, for every \(p\), there is a \(p\)-group \(G\) of class \(2\) which admits \(A_5\) acting in this way. This corrects an error which occurred in [\textit{S. Dolfi, E. Jabara} and \textit{M. S. Lucido}, Sib. Mat. Zh. 45, No. 6, 1285-1298 (2004); translation in Sib. Math. J. 45, No. 6, 1053-1062; Zbl 1096.20026)] in which it was stated that \(G\) should be Abelian if \(p\not\in\{2,5\}\). Other interesting results, which refine the main theorem of [op. cit.] are: (1) \(\mathrm{PSL}(2,49)\) cannot act on a non-Abelian \(7\)-group \(G\) with an element of order \(5\) acting fixed point freely on \(G\) and (2) if \(A_6\) acts on an Abelian \(3\)-group \(G\) with an element of order \(5\) acting fixed point freely, then \(G\) is elementary Abelian.
