Let \(M\) be a finitely generated module over a local ring \(R\). From its minimal free resolution \[ \cdots\longrightarrow R^{b_2}\longrightarrow R^{b_1}\longrightarrow R^{b_0}\longrightarrow M\longrightarrow 0 \] we will have the Betti sequence \(b^R(M):=(b_0,b_1,b_2,\ldots )\). There are so many questions which are about the possible behavior of \(b^R(M)\); see [\textit{I. Peeva} and \textit{M. Stillman}, J. Commut. Algebra 1, No. 1, 159--195 (2009; Zbl 1187.13010)]. For instance, the Buchsbaum-Eisenbud-Horrocks Rank Conjecture set lower bounds for each \(b^R_i(M)\), at least for \(R\) is regular, and this conjecture is related to multiplicative structures on resolutions, vector bundles on punctured discs, and equivariant cohomology of products of spheres, see [\textit{D. A. Buchsbaum} and \textit{D. Eisenbud}, Am. J. Math. 99, 447--485 (1977; Zbl 0373.13006); \textit{R. Hartshorne}, Topology 18, 117--128 (1979; Zbl 0417.14011)] and [\textit{G. Carlsson}, Invent. Math. 69, 393--400 (1982; Zbl 0517.57020)]. For \(R\) is not regular, see in [\textit{L. L. Avramov}, in: Six lectures on commutative algebra. Lectures Presented Summer Sch., Bellateria 1996, Prog. Math. 166, 1--118 (1998; Zbl 0934.13008)], there are more questions about the possible behavior of \(b^R(M)\). Which was motivated by ideas in [\textit{M. Boij} and \textit{J. Söderberg}, J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 78, No. 1, 85--106 (2008; Zbl 1189.13008)] (also see [\textit{D. Eisenbud} and \textit{F.-O. Schreyer}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 22, No. 3, 859--888 (2009; Zbl 1213.13032)]), in this interesting paper, authors define the shape of the free resolution of \(M\) as the Betti sequence \(b^R(M)\) viewed up to scalar multiple. Instead of asking if there exists a module \(M\) with a given Betti sequence \(\mathbf{v}\), they ask if there exists a Betti sequence \(b^R(M)\) with the same shape as \(\mathbf{v}\) (i. e. \(b^R(M)\) is a scalar multiple of \(\mathbf{v}\)). The first result is a characterization of shapes of minimal free resolutions over a regular local ring with some interesting examples. And, the second result is an asymptotic characterization of shapes of minimal free resolutions over hypersurface rings. A conjecture for the cone of Betti sequences over a hypersurface rings depends only on the dimension and multiplicity of the base ring is also given.
