Let \(\mathcal F\) be a class of groups and \(\pi\) a set of primes. A subgroup \(M\) of \(G\) is \(\mathcal F\)-maximal in \(G\) if \(M\in\mathcal F\) and \(K\not\in\mathcal F\) whenever \(M\subset K\subseteq G\). A normal subgroup \(N\) is contained in \(Z_{\pi\mathcal F}(G)\) whenever for every chief factor \(H/K\) of \(G\) with \(H\subseteq N\) which is not a \(\pi'\)-group we have that the split extension of \(H/K\) by \((G/K)/C_{G/K}(H/K)\) belongs to \(\mathcal F\). -- The article indicates conditions securing that the intersection of all \(\mathcal F\)-maximal subgroups of a group is equal to or contained in \(Z_{\pi\mathcal F}(G)\), where \(\mathcal F\) is a subgroup closed saturated formation.
