The authors are concerned with the accurate computation of a single, simple eigenvalue as well as with the approximation of a cluster of eigenvalues which may contain degenerate ones. The eigenvalue problems come from the classical finite element approximation of general divergence type self-adjoint elliptic problems. They rely on the finite element analysis of the associated boundary value problems and provide a posteriori estimation of the error in eigenvalues and eigenvectors computation of such problems. Numerical examples refer to the first few eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian on the unit square and on an L-shape domain and of Schrödinger type operator with discontinuous potential.
