The authors study maximal subgroups of \(\text{GL}(n,D)\), where \(n\) is a positive integer and \(D\) is a division ring; specifically they extend work of M. Mahdavi-Hezavehi to a wider class of division rings. For example they prove the following, see Theorem 2.8. Let \(D\) be a non-commutative division ring with centre \(F\) and assume that for every finite subset \(S\) of \(D\) the division subring of \(D\) generated by \(S\) has finite dimension over its centre. If \(\text{GL}(n,D)\) has a maximal subgroup \(M\) such that \(M\) is periodic modulo \(F^*\), the multiplicative group of \(F\) embedded in \(\text{GL}(n,D)\) in the usual way, then \(n=1\), \(\text{char\,}D=p>0\) for some prime \(p\), \([D:F]=p^2\), \(F^*\leq M\), the subset \(K\), consisting of \(M\) with \(\{0\}\) adjoined, is a maximal subfield of \(D\) and \(K\) is purely inseparable over \(F\). Firstly, in a previous paper the authors have shown that the assumption on \(D\) is definitely weaker than assuming that for all \(S\) as above the division \(F\)-subalgebra of \(D\) generated by \(S\) has finite dimension over \(F\). Secondly, the results quoted above generalize work of Mahdavi-Hezavehi involving those \(D\) having finite dimension over \(F\). Thirdly, this work of Mahdavi-Hezavehi plays a significant role in the authors' proof of their Theorem 2.8.
