In this very important and useful paper, the authors study distributed optimal control problems. Here the state system constitutes a phase field model of Cahn-Hilliard type that describes phase segregation of two species (atoms and vacancies) on a lattice in the presence of diffusion. The proposed type of optimal control problems occurs in industrial production processes. The system is singular, with highly nonlinear and nonstandard coupling. First-order necessary conditions of optimality for distributed optimal control problems are derived (they are of utmost importance for the practical solution of optimal control problems). All results are presented in a systematic and self-contained manner, proofs being sufficiently detailed. The authors propose the precise proofs of existence and uniqueness of the solution of a system of two highly nonlinearly coupled PDEs.
