Let \(k\) be a field, \(\mathcal{A}\) be the category of finite-dimensional vector spaces over \(k\) and \(\mathcal{T}=\displaystyle \lim_\leftrightarrow\mathcal{A}\) be the exact category of Tate spaces. Kapranov studied the dimensional torsor \(\text{Dim}(V)\) and the determinantal gerbe \(\text{Det}(V)\) of objects \(V\in \mathcal{T}\) and the purpose of the paper under review is to give a topological interpretation of \(\text{Dim}(V)\) and \(\text{Det}(V)\) in a more general setting. More precisely, the author studies so-called partially abelian exact categories \(\mathcal{A}\) and the associated Beilinson categories \(\displaystyle \lim_\leftrightarrow\mathcal{A}\), called generalized Tate spaces. Then \(\text{Dim}\) and \(\text{Det}\) can be interpreted as cohomological invariants of the Waldhausen space associated to \(\displaystyle\lim_\leftrightarrow\mathcal{A}\) and the author shows, in particular, that they are multiplicative in admissible short exact sequences of generalized Tate spaces. To generalize the determinantal torsor and the determinantal gerbe to objects of \(\displaystyle\lim_\leftrightarrow\mathcal{A}\) for any exact category \(\mathcal{A}\), it is necessary to generalize Sato Grassmannians, originally defined for Tate spaces. The paper is organized as follows. In Section 2 the author recalls Waldhausen spaces, delooping and determinantal theories. In the next section Sato Grassmannians are defined in any exact category and partially abelian exact categories are studied. Section 4 studies the dimensional torsor and the determinantal gerbe and interprets these objects in terms of the Waldhausen space. In Section 5 the author presents some applications. In particular, it is proved that \(\mathcal{T}\) is partially abelian exact, thus making the study of 2- (more generally, \(n\)-) Tate spaces possible within the developed framework. Finally, in the Appendix some facts about exact categories and multiplicative gerbes are recalled.
