Let \(S=k[x_1,\dots,x_n ]\) with \(k\) a field. In [Invent. Math. 68, 175--193 (1982; Zbl 0516.10009)], \textit{R. P. Stanley} conjectured that for any finitely generated \(\mathbb{Z}^n\)-graded \(S\)-module \(M\) one always has that \(\mathrm{sdepth} (M)\geq \mathrm{depth} (M)\) i.e. that the Stanley depth is always greater than or equal to the depth. This is known as the Stanley conjecture and remains open. This paper provides new results on Stanley depth andthe Stanley conjecture. Theorem 2.5 gives lower bounds for the Stanley depth of a weakly polymatroidal ideal \(I\) and for the module \(S/I\) in terms of the analytic spread of \(I\) (polymatroidal and weakly polymatroidal ideals were defined in [\textit{J. Herzog} and \textit{T. Hibi}, J. Algebr. Comb. 16, No. 3, 239--268 (2002; Zbl 1012.05046)] and [Monomial ideals. Graduate Texts in Mathematics 260. London: Springer. (2011; Zbl 1206.13001)] respectively). Using this result, the authors proof in Corollaries 2.7 and 2.11 that if \(I\) is a polymatroidal or stable ideal generated in a single degree, then \(I^k\) and \(S/I^k\) satisfy Stanley's conjecture for big enough \(k\).
