The authors consider the class \(S_p^w\) of compact operators \(K\) defined on a Hilbert space whose singular numbers \(s_n(K)\) satisfy that \(\sum_{n=0}^\infty |s_n(K)w_n|^p<\infty\) for a given sequence of complex numbers \((w_n)\). They consider functional Hilbert spaces, meaning Hilbert spaces \(\mathcal H(\Omega)\) of complex valued functions on some set \(\Omega\) such that the point evaluation is continuous and for any \(\lambda\in \Omega\) there exists \(f_\lambda\in \mathcal H(\Omega)\) with \(f_\lambda(\lambda)\neq 0\). They denote by \(k_{\mathcal H,\lambda}\) the reproducing kernel and by \(\hat k_{\mathcal H,\lambda}\) the normalized one. Also, write \(\tilde A(\lambda)=\langle A\hat k_{\mathcal H,\lambda}, \hat k_{\mathcal H,\lambda}\rangle\) for the Berezin transform. A standard functional Hilbert space \(\mathcal H= \mathcal H(Q)\) is the one where \(Q\) is a topological space whose boundary \(\partial Q\) is non-empty and such that \(\hat k_{\mathcal H,\lambda_n}\) converges weakly to \(0\) as \(\lambda \to \xi\) for any point \(\xi\in \partial Q\), for instance, Hardy or Bergman Hilbert spaces. A criterion for compactness in the case of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces in terms of the Berezin transform of the unitary orbits \(U^{-1}AU\) restricted to the subspaces \(U^{-1}\mathcal H\) is presented, extending previous results (see [\textit{E. Nordgren} and \textit{P. Rosenthal}, Oper. Theory, Adv. Appl. 73, 362--368 (1994; Zbl 0874.47013)]. Necessary and sufficient conditions for compact operators to belong to \(S^w_p\) are also given in terms of the Berezin transform of the weighted shift operator associated to the weights coming from the singular values of the operator and the sequence \((w_n)\).
