Jiu Zhang Shuan Shu (The nine chapters on the mathematical art) is an ancient Chinese mathematical book. It was edited and published by Liu Hui in the year 263. The original text goes back to the second century BC. The present author shows that Chapter 8 of the book deals in fact with linear equations and the technique used therein for solving 18 presented real-life problems is exactly Gaussian elimination.
