Looking for the (pre)history of infinite-dimensional optimization, the author finds the usual suspects: Queen Dido and the isoperimetric problem (posed as a mathematical problem by Jacob Bernoulli), Zenodorus's ``On isometric figures'', Johann Bernoulli's brachistochrone problem, Newton's problem: ``What is the shape of a body of minimum resistance?'' (1687). Some remarks regarding current and future research in infinite-dimensional optimization, including drag minimization in aeronautics, round off this paper.
