The Cauchy problem for the semi-relativistic Schrödinger-Poisson system of equations is studied in \(\mathbb R^n\), \(n\geq1\), for a wide class of nonlocal interactions including the repulsive Coulomb one in three dimensions. Having proven the local and global well-posedness of the system of equations, the asymptotic behavior of the solution at infinite mass is rigorously derived and compared with solutions of the non-relativistic Schrödinger-Poisson system. In the case that the initial density matrix is a pure state, the Schrödinger-Poisson system considered here becomes a Hartree equation discussed by \textit{Y. Cho} and \textit{T. Ozawa} [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 38, No. 4, 1060--1074 (2006; Zbl 1122.35119)] and \textit{E. Lenzmann} [Math. Phys. Anal. Geom. 10, No. 1, 43--64 (2007; Zbl 1171.35474)]. Useful results about fractional integration and the fractional Leibniz rule are summarized in an appendix.
