Teichmüller theory started out as a theory on deformations and on moduli spaces of marked Riemann surfaces. In their well-written survey, the authors sketch the origins and the early developments of Teichmüller theory (up to Kodaira-Spencer theory and Kähler structures on manifolds), and present the opinions of many mathematicians such as Ahlfors, Bers, and Weil.
