The author provides straightforward examples of one-dimensional mixing subshifts with positive topological entropy which have two distinct measures of maximal entropy. This construct is then generalised to yield subshifts with any number of distinct ergodic measures of maximal entropy, including infinitely many of them. The author also gives an example of a subshift which has two mutually singular equilibrium states for Hölder continuous potentials. This example is then extended to the case of any number of equilibrium states, including infinitely many of them.
