    The authors study the orbital stability of the standing waves for the equation \[ \varepsilon ^2u_{tt}+2i\varepsilon V(x)u_t-\varepsilon ^2\Delta u+mu-W(x)u-| u| ^{p-1}u=0 \tag{1} \] in \((0,+\infty )\times \mathbb{R}^N\), where \(V,W\in C^2(\mathbb{R}^N)\cap W^{2,\infty }(\mathbb{R}^N).\) Let us assume that there exists a non-degenerate local minimum of the function \(Z(y):=m-\omega ^2-2\omega V(y)-W(y)\) at a point \(x_0\in \mathbb{R}^N\) and \(\inf _{x\in \mathbb{R}^N}>0\). Further, let us assume that the family \(\omega \rightarrow \varphi _{\omega }\in H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\) of the equation \[ -\Delta \varphi _{\omega }+Z(\varepsilon y)\varphi _{\omega }-| \varphi _{\omega }| ^{p-1}\varphi _{\omega }=0 \] is \(C^1\) uniformly in \(\varepsilon \). If the initial value problem for the equation (1) is locally well-posed in \(H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\times L^2(\mathbb{R}^N)\) the authors prove the existence \(\varepsilon _0>0\) such that for any \(0<\varepsilon <\varepsilon _0\) the standing waves \(\text{e}^{i\omega t}\varphi _{\omega }\) are stable if \(p<1+4/N\) and \(Z(x_0)<(\omega +V(x_0))^2\left(\frac{4}{p-1}-N\right)\), and they are unstable if \(Z(x_0)>(\omega +V(x_0))^2\left(\frac{4}{p-1}-N\right)\) or if \(p\geq 1+4/N\).
