This is the first volume in a series of three, dedicated to the collected works of Walter Gautschi. A monumentary work that finally publishes in one sweep the many important contributions of Gautschi to a quite diverse set of mathematical disciplines. The layout of this first volume is as follows: after the introductory part, several authors put the contributions of Gautschi to different subjects into historical perspective and, finally, the papers of Gautschi are reprinted.
