Let \(C\subset \mathbb {P}^{g-1}\) be the canonical model of a general curve of genus \(g\). Using the Brill-Noether theory of \(C\) the author proves the following very nice results: (a) If \(g\) is not a prime, then \(C\) is contained in a Segre embedding \(\mathbb {P}^{r_1}\times \mathbb {P}^{r_2}\to \mathbb {P}^{g-1}\). (b) For all integers \(n\geq 3\) and \(r_i>0\), \(1\leq i \leq n\), \(C\) is not contained in any Segre embedding \(\mathbb {P}^{r_1}\times \cdots \times \mathbb {P}^{r_n}\to \mathbb {P}^{g-1}\). Let \(X\subset \mathbb {P}^{g-1}\) be any canonically embedded curve. Then \(X\) is contained in some Segre embedding \(\mathbb {P}^{r_1}\times \cdots \times \mathbb {P}^{r_n}\to \mathbb {P}^{g-1}\), \(n\geq 2\), \(r_i>0\), if and only if \(X\) has line bundles \(L_i\), \(1\leq i \leq n\), such that \(\bigotimes _{i=1}^{n} L_i \cong \omega _X\), \(h^0(X,L_i) =r_i+1\) and \(\prod _{i=1}^{n} (r_i+1) =g\).
