The author studies a certain fairly general class of iterated function systems consisting of countably many non-conformal contractions. For this class it is shown that the Hausdorff dimension of the associated limit set is equal to the supremum of the dimensions of compactly supported ergodic measures (given by a formula, which is similar to the Ledrapier-Young formula). Moreover, it is shown that for certain countable families of potential functions the multifractal analysis of Birkhoff averages leads to a conditional variational principle. The results of the paper are applied to the interesting example of limit sets obtained by taking the cross product of the binary expansion (along the vertical line) and the continued fraction expansion (along the horizontal line), and then deleting certain pairs of digits.
