Let \(\Omega\subset\mathbb R^n\) be a bounded domain with piecewise smooth boundary. Let \(\lambda_i\) be the \(i\)-th eigenvalue of the Dirichlet eigenvalue problem of the poly-Laplacian with arbitrary order, that is, \[ \begin{cases} (-\Delta)^l u =\lambda u, & \text{in } \Omega ,\\ u=\dfrac{\partial u}{\partial \nu}=\cdots=\dfrac{\partial^{l-1} u}{\partial \nu^{l-1}}=0, & \text{on } \partial \Omega, \end{cases} \] For \(l=1\), the optimal lower estimate in view of this asymptotic relation for the sums \(\sum_{j=1}^k\lambda_j\) has been proven by \textit{P. Li} and \textit{S.-T. Yau} [Commun. Math. Phys. 88, 309--318 (1983; Zbl 0554.35029)] and extended to the poly-Laplacian case by \textit{H. A. Levine} and \textit{M. H. Protter} [Math. Methods Appl. Sci. 7, 210--222 (1985; Zbl 0591.35050)]. For eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian, \textit{A. D. Melas} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 131, No. 2, 631--636 (2003; Zbl 1015.58011)] improved the Li-Yau estimate by adding a term that depends on the ratio of the volume to the moment of inertia \(I(\Omega)=\min_{a\in\mathbb R^n} \int_\Omega| x-a|^2 dx\). The main result of the paper under review is the following estimate that improves the Levine-Protter result and extends Melas inequality to the poly-Laplacian case: \[ \begin{multlined}\frac{1}{k}\sum_{j=1}^k\lambda_j \geq \dfrac{n}{n+2l}\frac{(2\pi)^{2l}}{\big(B_n|\Omega|\big)^{\frac{2l}{n}}}k^{\frac{2l}{n}}+\\ +\frac{n}{n+2l}\sum_{p=1}^{l} \frac{(l+1-p)}{(24)^p n\cdots(n+2p-2)}\dfrac{(2\pi)^{2(l-p)}}{(B_nV(\Omega))^{\frac{2(l-p)}{n}}} \left(\frac{|\Omega|}{I(\Omega)}\right)^pk^{\frac{2(l-p)}{n}},\end{multlined} \] where \(|\Omega|\) denotes the volume of \(\Omega\) and \(B_n\) denotes the volume of the unit ball in \(\mathbb R^n\).
