Let \(R\) denote a prime ring with \(\text{char\,}R\neq 2\), \(Q_s\) the symmetric Martindale quotient ring of \(R\), and \(Q_{ms}\) the symmetric maximal quotient ring of \(R\). Call \(R\) a local matrix ring if there is a ring \(S\) with identity element so that each finite subset in \(R\) is contained in a subring isomorphic to \(M_n(S)\) for some \(n>1\). For \(\tau\) an anti-automorphism of \(R\), an additive \(D\colon R\to Q_{ms}\) (\(Q_s\)) is a Jordan \(\tau\)-derivation if for all \(x\in R\), \(D(x^2)=D(x)\tau(x)+xD(x)\). The main result of the authors is that any Jordan \(\tau\)-derivation \(D\colon R\to Q_{ms}\) of a local matrix ring \(R\) has the form \(D(x)=xa-a\tau(x)\) for some \(a\in Q_{ms}\). The authors use this result to obtain two variations of it. The first is that when \(\text{soc}(R)\neq 0\) and \(R\) is not a division algebra, then when \(D\colon R\to Q_s\) is a Jordan \(\tau\)-derivation, then again \(D(x)=xa-a\tau(x)\), here with \(a\in Q_s\). The second variation concerns \(B(X)\), the ring of bounded linear operators on a Banach space \(X\) over \(F\), either the real or complex numbers, so that \(\dim_FX>1\). If \(D\colon R\to B(X)\) is a Jordan \(\tau\)-derivation, for \(R\) a subalgebra of \(B(X)\) containing all operators of finite rank, then for some \(a\in B(X)\), \(D(x)=xa-a\tau(x)\) for all \(x\in R\).
