For the \(q\)-difference equation \(f(tq)f^2(t)f(t/q)=t(1-f(t))\), the author constructs a formal series solution, \(f(t)=1+\sum_{n=1}^{\infty}a_n(q)t^{-n}\). The coefficients \(a_n(q)\) of the series are determined uniquely, and the author proves that this series diverges unless \(|q|=1\). In the latter case, a direct calculation shows that the series converges at least for large enough \(|t|\). Furthermore, if \(q\) is a root of unity, \(q^N=1\), the function \(f(t)\) is algebraic. Finally, if \(q=e^{ki\pi/2}\) or \(q=e^{ki\pi/3}\), then all \(a_n(q)\) are integers, and \(f(t)\) can be represented in terms of the hypergeometric series.
