Model-based feedback control of acoustic radiation from vibrating structures by means of structural control (Q1961126)

The aims of the reviewed article are 1) to develop a controller which reduces the acoustic energy radiated by vibrating structures by applying control forces to the structure, rather than controlling the acoustic field; 2) to control structure-borne noise due to random excitations for which no reference signal is available, such that feedback control must be used. A model for the fluid-structure interaction is integrated into the design of the controller, which allows to optimally control a cost function which expresses the sound power radiated from the radiator into the free field or the acoustic energy in an enclosure due to sound radiated into the enclosure. The control technique introduced in [\textit{W. T. Baumann, W. R. Saunders} and \textit{H. H. Robertshaw}, J. Am. Acoust. Soc. 90, No. 6, 3202-3208 (1991)] is generalized and complemented with a new identification procedure. The state-space models are suggested that describe the sound power that is radiated due to the structural response of a rectangular plate to a point force excitation. The design of the controller is discussed and a series of experiments are described in which the technique is applied to controlling the sound radiated from an elastic rectangular baffled plate.
