Two measurable subsets \(A_1, A_2\) of \({\mathbb R}\) are said to form an \(\alpha\)-pair if for every function \(f\in L^2\), the conditions \(f=0\) a.e. off \(A_1\) and \(\widehat f =0\) a.e. off \(A_2\) imply that \(f\) is identically zero. Let \(\delta_1, \delta_2\) be two intervals with \(|\delta_1|\leq d_1, |\delta_2|\leq d_2\). Consider the sets \(A_j=\cup _{k\in\mathbb Z}(\delta_j +kd_j), j=1,2.\) It is shown that if \(d_1d_2 /2\pi\) is irrational, then \((A_1, A_2)\) is an \(\alpha\)-pair provided the quantity \(|\delta_1|/d_1 +|\delta_2|/d_2\) is strictly smaller than \(1\), and is not an \(\alpha\)-pair provided this quantity in strictly greater than \(1\). If \(d_1 d_2/\pi\) is rational and is equal to the irreducible fraction \(p/q\), then \((A_1, A_2)\) is an \(\alpha\)-pair if and only if \([p(1-|\delta_1|/d_1)]+[p(1-|\delta_2|/d_2)]\geq p\), where \([a]\) is the integral part of a number \(a\).
