A base \({\mathcal B}\) for a space \(X\) is called a weakly uniform base provided that whenever \({\mathcal U}\) is an infinite subcollection of \({\mathcal B}\), and \(x\in \bigcap{\mathcal U}\), then we have that \(\{x\}= \bigcap{\mathcal U}\). Related to this notion, a base \({\mathcal B}\) for a space \(X\) is called a sharp base provided that whenever \(\{U_n: n\in \omega\}\) is a pairwise distinct sequence drawn from \({\mathcal B}\), and \(x\in \bigcap_{n\in \omega}U_n\), then \(\{\bigcap_{k<n} U_k: n\in\omega\}\) is a local base at \(x\). It is easy to see that every sharp base is a weakly uniform base. It was shown by \textit{R. W. Heath} and \textit{W. F. Lindgren} [Houston J. Math. 2, 85-90 (1976; Zbl 0318.54032)] that every weakly uniform base for a first countable space is point-countable at each non-isolated point. Further, it was shown by this reviewer, \textit{G. M. Reed} and \textit{M. L. Wage} [ibid., 57-63 (1976; Zbl 0315.54030)] that it is consistent that every first countable space with a weakly uniform base and no more than \(\omega_1\) isolated points has a point-countable base, and it is consistent that there is a Moore space with a weakly uniform base and exactly \(\omega_2\) isolated points with no point-countable base. In this paper, the authors show that every space with a sharp base has a point-countable base. They also show that it is consistent that every first countable space with a weakly uniform base and no more than \(\aleph_\omega\) isolated points has a point-countable base.
